We’re celebrating Volunteers’ Week to thank all our wonderful volunteers in the region and to inspire others to volunteer.
Girls can do anything – including volunteering! Girlguiding provides plenty of opportunities for girls to be involved as young volunteers whether it’s as a Rainbow and Brownie helpers, as part of a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), as a young leader, or as a peer educator.
Read on to hear how former Brownies became young volunteers with their former unit in London South West county.
1st South Battersea Brownies
When leader Debbie from Comox Guides in Vancouver Island, Canada last visited 1st South Battersea Brownies, Emerald Owl (Millie) and Ginger Owl (Libby) were Brownies. When Debbie, a regular visitor to the unit over the past ten years, travelled to London for the Coronation events this May, she met them again. This time she found them leading UMAs and wrangling Brownies themselves!
The young volunteers helped the Brownies bring old traditions to life with the Century time travel UMA, including performing a ‘Grand Howl’ for visitor Debbie.
Both Millie and Libby came back to the unit as part of their DofE volunteering experience, along with Iris (Eagle Owl) and Josie (Blue Owl). Libby and Josie have continued after DofE and are now young leaders.
In addition to being valuable members of the unit’s leadership team, the girls volunteered at Battersea district’s takeover of the Clapham Common parkrun for International Women's Day this year.
