Celebrating spring with RSPB

This March, 200 Rainbows, Brownies and Guides and their leaders visited London parks to discover the nature on their doorstep and feel good about the changing season. The urban adventures at Southwark Park and Highgate Wood were part of our continued partnership with the RSPB, which encourages girls to learn about, connect with, and take action for nature.

The girls explored the habitats of the parks and learned about how it is used by different plants, animals and humans. They developed their map reading skills, learned about birds, created beautiful natural art, and hunted for minibeasts, earning them the Insects and Minibeasts badge.

“I saw a newt! And learned that snails have a lot of teeth.”

“I enjoyed all the activities, especially clay making, spending time with my friends, fresh air and nature.”

“We know that the majority of girls are really concerned by the nature crisis we are facing and the enthusiasm and excitement for nature we have seen at these events goes to show just how much impact this generation will have," said Yvonne Hunt, RSPB Youth Partnerships Officer. "If we act together, we can turn things around.”

Thanks to the generous support of the Kusuma Trust, girls from families with low income and those who would not otherwise access these kinds of activities were able to attend the event free of charge. Thanks also to the London Borough of Southwark Parks Department and the City of London Corporation Environment Department for working in partnership on this event.
