During August, participants from across the region met at Blackland Farm to work towards their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE).
Split into 2 groups, 12 participants successfully passed their Bronze expedition, training for and completing a 2-day, 1-night expedition. Meanwhile, 6 more practiced for their Silver expedition, walking for 3 days and camping for 2 nights. A key feature of the DofE expeditions is that they are self sufficient, so all participants were very busy during their adventures, planning their own walking routes using map skills, carrying their own kit, pitching tents, and planning and cooking their own meals.
Jo Newell, region DofE adviser said: “I really enjoyed myself and felt such a sense of pride and belonging from working with people from all over the region. The participants were amazing and we are so proud of the work they put in.
“The DofE brings so many more benefits than just the already impressive achievements that are recorded. These young people have made friends for life, and have created some amazing experiences.
“Finally, a huge heartfelt thanks to the volunteers who helped to make the week what it was. They gave up their valuable free time to ensure these young people were able to complete their expeditions.”
If you are interested in offering DofE to your young members and want to find out how to get started, or if you already offer the award but need some support, Jo will be hosting an online drop-in session on 25 September from 7:30-9:00pm.
