Pipâs Perspective â a message from the Chief Commissioner
Have you ever met someone who has introduced themselves as an âadventurerâ? Well I have; what an opening! How can you fail to be grabbed into conversation with someone who describes herself like that? It got me thinking about how I introduce myself. Of course, it depends on your audience but could you, would you, introduce yourself as an âadventurerâ?
What does adventure mean to you? The dictionary definition is: âunexpected or exciting experience; daring enterpriseâ; well Iâm up for some of that, are you?
Girlguiding, and you as a volunteer, offers adventure to our young members but do you grab some for yourself too? Adventure doesnât have to mean being the-first-woman-to-row-across-the-Atlantic-Ocean-twice as our new LaSER Ambassador Sally Kettle has done; maybe you accompanied a Brownie on a ride at Butlins that pushed you outside your comfort zone or perhaps youâve signed up for your first Guide camp this summer. Whatever your personal âadventureâ story, try introducing yourself as an âadventurerâ and tell the world what Girlguiding has to offer its volunteers!

International Womenâs Day - Saturday 8 March 2014
International Womenâs Day is an amazing day. Thousands of events are being held throughout the world to inspire everyone to take action and celebrate achievement. It is a fantastic opportunity to shout out about Girlguiding.
Development Workers from London and South East England Region will be taking part in the Women of the World Festival at the Southbank Centre. The Festival will be a weekend of talks, debates, performance and activism celebrating women and girls.
LaSER will have a stand from Friday 7 March to Sunday 9 March so are looking for volunteers who could spare a few hours to share their Girlguiding stories.
Additionally, many local authorities and community groups are running festivals, debates and special awards for International Womenâs Day. If youâd like to get involved try contacting your council. Weâd love to hear what you have planned.
Please email Lynne Woolley (lynne.woolley@girlguiding.org.uk) at Girlguiding HQ by Friday 21 February.

You can only have up to 18 Rainbows in a unit â False!
Girlguiding suggests adult to child ratios for normal unit meetings within the usual meeting place. Unit leadership teams are not obliged to follow them, apart from the mandatory requirement for two adults at all Rainbow unit meetings. The leadership teamâs decision regarding the number of girls and young women in the unit is final.
The ratios become mandatory when taking the unit members out of the normal meeting place and undertaking certain activities.
