Funtastic! feedback survey

Thank you to all who attended Funtastic! - we really hope you enjoyed the weekend at Butlins as much as we did. To help us evaluate and plan other region events we would be very grateful if you could complete the Funtastic! survey and provide us with your feedback. There are two different surveys – one for leaders and their Brownies and one for young leaders. Please complete the appropriate survey. The surveys will close on 23 February, at the end of the day.

An update on recruitment checks

Girlguiding members and DofE volunteers aged 16 - 18 do not require recruitment checks even when attending residential events. However, it is essential that they are supervised at all times by a volunteer who has completed Girlguiding’s recruitment checks, irrespective of whether this is a local meeting or a residential event, to remain within the criteria of current legislation. Recruitment checks must be undertaken when attendance to a residential event is taking place after the young person turns 18 and this must be completed in time for the event.

Top Tips for Join Us

‘Don’t be a stranger’

Unit leaders, please provide your contact details as well as unit times and address. Many queries are directed to HQ/region once it has been agreed that a girl will join, but parents then don’t have a unit contact.

Using twitter for #growingguiding

The internet is changing the way we live. Lots of people are using the internet to socialise, communicate and learn. Some Girlguiding units have their own websites. You can even follow Girlguiding units on twitter, a website that allows exchanges of short messages called ‘tweets’.

Community Development Workers in LaSER have helped set up and manage the @growingguiding twitter account as well as supporting volunteers to start their own accounts.

The aim of @growingguiding is to share growing guiding ideas nationally (although we have over 1000 people from around the world following us), but there are wider benefits to tweeting:

• Support and social networking for volunteers, new leaders and groups

• Share news and events

• Find information on funding and awards

• Connect and talk to local partners; from schools to councils, journalists to regional charities

• Record and celebrate all the amazing things our units and volunteers do

Queen’s Guide Presentation

Jennifer Webster, from Kent West, was very excited when she received an invitation to go to Goldsmiths’ Hall in London to be presented with her Queen’s Guide Award by Gill Slocombe, the Chief Guide.

Jennifer said that she was determined to complete this award as she has always been heavily involved in guiding and it was something that nobody in her Division had done for ten years.

She took on numerous challenges including a River Study in Wales (camping for days in the rain), helping with the educational side of Kent Search and Rescue and remaining involved with her local units. Jennifer said that she got to meet lots of different and new people travelling the country and doing new and exciting things which have helped her to develop further in guiding. She is now joint district and division commissioner which she says enables her to encourage and help others who wish to take up this award.
