Summer 2024 international adventures

46 girls and 16 leaders gained confidence, skills, experiences and friendships as part of our region’s international adventures this summer.

Travelling on a self-selected interrailing route through Europe, Train tracks and Backpacks visited Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium. Meanwhile, Mountains and Mayhem visited Czechia, Slovakia, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Germany. Activities included paddleboarding, tobogganing, and hiking as well as exploring cities, museums and even a trip to the opera. Both groups also stopped at WAGGGS World Centre Our Chalet in the Swiss mountains to learn about Girlguiding history and participate in its famous pinning ceremony.

It was a brilliant experience and I am very grateful to have been part of it. It enabled me to explore many new countries and immerse myself in many cultures that I may not have had the opportunity to experience without this.

The Cherry Blossoms and Bento Bandits travelled further afield to Japan, experiencing and exploring 9 cities between them from Tokyo to Hiroshima. Other activities included canoeing in the shadow of Mt Fuji, immersive art and, of course, karaoke!

Both groups met together with Japanese Girl Scouts in Tokyo, where they experienced a tea ceremony, toured a temple and learned origami. Our region members also visited groups in Odawara and Chiba, playing games, sharing songs, dancing and eating together.

I didn’t just visit places - I experienced them. Every part of this trip was something I could never forget and has made me feel like I want to travel the world and experience even more. Something I’ll never forget is the smiles on the Japanese Girl Scouts’ faces when we stepped off our train and the warm welcome we received from them all.

— Amelia, Cherry Blossoms

Not only did I get to see so many beautiful new countries, eat lots of delicious food and do a tonne of new adventurous activities, but I grew as a person in my confidence and maturity. I made so many friends for life and did so many things that were outside of my comfort zone but they challenged me in the best way possible.
